The University of Nebraska System has of its "Heart to Heart" podcast series. Hosted by University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., the podcast features in-depth conversations with leaders, researchers, educators, alums and partners who are making a difference in Nebraska and beyond.
In this episode, Dr. Gold is joined by John Arch, Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature. Arch is a proud alumnus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he earned his MBA. On the episode, Speaker Arch shares insights into his journey in public service, his vision for Nebraska’s future and the critical role the University of Nebraska plays in workforce development and economic growth.
Speaker Arch’s career was initially shaped by his early experiences in pastoral ministry and a desire to work with people. He attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha and earned his MBA, later finding his personal mission working at Boys Town—where he was able to connect his interests in health care and child welfare.
Now, as Speaker of the Legislature, Arch continues to impact the lives across the state. He outlined his vision for Nebraska as a "state of opportunity" where individuals and families can build their futures. He highlighted the University of Nebraska’s role in preparing students to take advantage of these opportunities.
"The university is absolutely critical to helping educate and keep people in Nebraska,” Speaker Arch said. “Whether they are being attracted to the state by opportunity, or whether they are growing up here and seeing that opportunity firsthand, the university helps shape and prepare them for success."
Another key topic of discussion on the episode was Nebraska’s workforce challenges, particularly in industries like healthcare, technology, and agriculture. Arch stressed the importance of aligning goals across higher education, industry and government.
"We need to understand what the needs are in Nebraska and adjust our programs, incentives, and support structures to meet those needs. The alignment of these goals is critical," he said.
Dr. Gold and Speaker Arch also explored the importance of public-private partnerships in driving economic growth and fostering innovation. Speaker Arch emphasized the need to break down silos between entities to strengthen the state.
"It all boils down to communication,” he said. “We need a clear, common mission that we can all buy into, whether in government, industry or higher education.”
Reflecting on his legislative career, Arch expressed hope that his focus on strengthening processes and systems in state government will leave a lasting impact. He encouraged young leaders to pursue their passions while also developing strong people skills.
"No matter what industry you’re in, it’s all about people. Building strong relationships and knowing how to work with others will help you stand out and succeed in leadership," he advised.
New episodes of the "Heart to Heart" podcast are released monthly, featuring guests from across the University of Nebraska System and the community, covering topics ranging from education and healthcare to athletics and student success.
